More Than Just a Basketball Hoop
Bonding on the basketball courts (a.k.a the driveway) was the highlight of so many parents’ childhoods. If you want your children to have the same fond memories, grab your kiddos and teach them about the fun of driveway basketball. Not only will they be having fun, but there are several benefits that growing children get from playing the game! An active lifestyle aids in developing coordination and motor-control as well as strengthening endurance. This will help them keep up with their friends in sports and games. They are also gaining valuable social skills from being a part of team (even if it’s just 3v3 on your driveway!)
Beyond the standard play, there is a variety of active games that can be played right in the comfort of your own driveway:
Twenty-one is a game a lot like 1-on-1. It’s a great game to work on shooting skills and hand-eye coordination. There is a variety of different ways that you can play or alter the rules to the game, usually to adapt to the skill levels of the players. Be creative in your style of play.
H-O-R-S-E is a classic game that is fun for kids (and adults) of any age. One of the great benefits of this game is that it can be adapted to the players’ skill sets. Make up challenging shots, like shooting with your eyes closed or shooting behind your back to make it even more memorable. You can also spell out another word to add another element of fun - use a funny word or maybe even your kids’ name to personalize the game to your family.
Around the World is another fun drill to bond you with your kids. This game can be a challenging way to develop shooting skills or a fast-paced and fun way to spend an afternoon.
The only limitation to the games you can play on your driveway is your imagination! What’s your favorite game to play with your basketball hoop?
